Election censorship at its worst

Vegas PBS and KLAS have decided that there are only two candidates running for Governor of Nevada this year. A visit to the Nevada Secretary of State website will show several more, but they are being ignored.

I find it highly inappropriate that so-called minor candidates have not been invited to the debate that KLAS and Vegas PBS are sponsoring. The voters should have easy access to hear all the candidates, not just those that the television stations approve of.

Even worse is the action of Vegas PBS defending this decision. The "PBS" in the station name stands for "Public Broadcasting Service" and the station receives some federal funding (albeit less than 12% according to the source story). Vegas PBS should feel an obligation to present all the candidates to the public.

It gets even worse though. To be invited, a candidates had to have raised a minimum of $50,000 in campaign donations and also meet one of the following conditions:

  1. The candidate had to have received at least 10% of the vote in a primary
  2. The candidate had to have received at least 10% of the vote in a comparable election (what is that?)
  3. Be polling at 10% or more in a credible poll.

How can any third party or independent candidate meet those requirements without receiving exposure from news coverage? Local news sources have essentially refused to give coverage to any candidates other than the Democrat and Republican in this race. The so-called 'Tea Party of Nevada' candidate for US Senate might have received more coverage so far than all the third party candidates for governor combined.

I say shame on our local news providers!

(Inspiration and data for this post came from an AP wire story published by the Las Vegas Sun on August 24, 2010.  The original story is titled "5 Nev. gov. hopefuls left out of Sunday debate<")
